Hepatitis scare for swimsuit models

Posted on February 28th, 2007 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Sports Illustrated bash for its annual swimsuit issue has turned into a health scare for stars in Hollywood after a caterer working for celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck may have exposed them to acute Hepatitis A.

The Los Angeles County health department recommended on Tuesday that anyone who ate uncooked food at the sports magazine’s party on February 14 get treatment by Wednesday to avoid developing the serious liver disease.

Guests at the party included singer Beyonce Knowles [pictured], former Guns N’Roses bassist Duff McKagan, portly “Borat” co-star Ken Davitian, and a slew of models.

Health officials said the risk was “quite low” and that no Wolfgang Puck pre-packaged foods or restaurants were affected.

Hepatitis A is caused by a virus spread by ingesting something contaminated with the feces of an infected person. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal pain and jaundice.

Carl Shuster, president of Wolfgang Puck Catering, said the company was working closely with health officials to contact anyone who ate food prepared in its Hollywood kitchen between February 1 and 20.

Shuster said the worker was placed on medical leave and the company has “applied exceptional procedures” to disinfect the kitchens and food processing areas.

“Our catering efforts continue and we remain confident that our guests will receive the highest standards of excellence for which Wolfgang Puck is known,” the statement said.

This year’s swimsuit issue features Knowles as the cover model, with rapper Kanye West, country star Kenny Chesney and members of the bands Aerosmith and Gnarls Barkley posing with scantily clad models.

LOS ANGELES - Video-on-demand website All Adult Channel has released a new exclusive clip from the controversial Kim Kardashian Superstar sex tape. The free 30-second teaser can be viewed at www.alladultchannel.com/kimk.

Earlier Tuesday, Vivid announced that it has postponed its DVD release of the controversial sex-tape due to a lawsuit filed last week by Kardashian. Because of the delay, All Adult Channel is not currently taking pre-orders for its internet release of the title. However, according to AAC’s Lawrence Novitch, the site’s same-day download-to-burn release is still in the works.

“At this point, my expectations for this release are even higher than before,” Novitch said. “Our traffic and revenues have gone up since we announced our download-to-burn release; the buzz has been great. Hopefully, they’re going to be able to work out the legal issues amicably and get this highly-anticipated release finalized.”

Another exclusive clip from Kim Kardashian Superstar is set to appear on All Adult Channel’s site today.

Madam Got Girls for Tommy Lasorda, Bruce Willis, Jim Belushi, Ben Affleck?

Posted on February 28th, 2007 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

Hollywood [LAist.com]- In what could turn out to be a long, expensive, and revealing lawsuit, Tommy Lasorda, the great former manager of the LA Dodgers, swears that he will sue if the tell-all autobiography “Secrets of a Hollywood Super Madam” is released on Thursday.

Hollywood madam Jody “Babydol” Gibson was popped eight years ago for pimping out high-priced hookers, porn stars, and Playboy models throughout 16 states. She was given three years but served less than two at Chowchilla.

The court records were censored to protect the high profile clients in her “trick book”, but on Thursday, barring any legal action, Babydol will release her book one chapter at a time thru her website, or for $17.95 at bookstores and on Amazon.

From the intro on her site:

“This book is about my life servicing the rich and famous… and their sex, sex, sex! From Ben Affleck’s steamy night with a hot blonde to Bruce Willis’ wild time the champagne flowed. Political figures like Barry Goldwater Jr., as well as House of Representative’s Texas Lt. Governor Ben Barnes, baseball legend Tommy La Sorda, and even Supermodel Naomi Campbell’s father negotiated with me for a Royal Arab Prince. Their excesses like a week with the richest man in the world The Sultan of Brunei, or the wild parties with Arnold and Sly; from Playboy Playmates to porn stars it’s all in here. And the money…find out how one lucky gal got over a million dollars in the country without declaring it!

“But it hadn’t started like that. The truth was my parents afforded me a wonderful beginning in the affluent suburbs of Westchester, N.Y. I came from a very clean-cut entertainment family with ambitions for a recording career.

“The truth is all I really wanted was to make videos for MTV.

“My sister was a soap opera star from daytime television, and mom was a personal talent manager famous for discovering a then unknown actor named Thomas Mopather, whose name she changed to Tom Cruise.

“See how I moved to Los Angeles with dreams of pop stardom and how it segued to becoming a Hollywood Super Madam.”

Maybe Tommy’s pissed cuz his name isn’t spelled right?

The man who bleeds Dodger Blue is apparently seeing red, according to the LA Times:

“I have never heard of this woman and don’t know why she would accuse me of something like this,” Lasorda said in a statement issued by his attorney, Tony Capozzola. “But if she prints these lies, I intend to sue.”

Willis’ attorney, Marty Singer, said: “The story is a complete fabrication. [Willis] doesn’t know this woman. He’s never even spoken to her.”

Sounds like the first book we’ll read this year.

Other alleged customers include Jim Belushi, designer Steve Madden, and producer Don Simpson.

The stars really are just like us!

Women a mystery to sex scientists

Posted on February 26th, 2007 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

ORLANDO [Chicago Tribune]  – To get an idea of just how much remains unknown about an area that directly affects most people’s lives, you need to drop in on the International Society for the Study of Women ’s Sexual Health.

Researchers presenting their findings at the society’s sixth annual meeting are still trying to figure out which hormones and neurotransmitters make sexual arousal possible, where in the brain orgasm takes place, and which nerves control the genital organs. Much of their work is being done in rats.

“Now we’re sticking needles into different parts of the brain,” said Dr. Irwin Goldstein, the Boston urologist who founded the multidisciplinary group. “Whatever pharmaceuticals are proven to help … most likely will work in the central nervous system.”

Clinicians, frustrated by the slow pace of sexual science, want effective treatments for patients brave enough to seek help–a small minority.

Although social scientists have been studying women’s sexuality for decades, medical science did not become interested until the advent of Viagra in the late 1990s raised the possibility that female sexual problems might be treated by medication.

Viagra, which treats erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the genitals, does not appear to work in women.

In fact, no drug has been approved in the U.S. for the disorder doctors call female sexual dysfunction. That may be understandable, given that experts aren’t sure what female sexual dysfunction is–or even if it exists.

The main session on Saturday morning was devoted to the topic, “What Is Sexual Desire and How Do We Know?”

Dr. Stephen Levine, a psychiatrist from Case Western Reserve University, argued that sexual desire feels a lot like sexual arousal, even though diagnostic guidelines distinguish between hypoactive sexual-desire disorder and female sexual-arousal disorder — and researchers recruit patients suffering from one or the other for separate clinical trials of new drugs.

“Science must measure,” Levine said, “so we measure how many times the patient said she had sexual thoughts or desired sex in the last four weeks. But we don’t know what we’re measuring.”

To some members of the society, fearing that women’s sexual complaints are being turned into medical illnesses for the convenience of doctors and the economic benefit of Big Pharma, that admission was a breath of fresh air.

“I think it’s progress that we can spend two hours in this performance-driven society admitting that maybe we don’t know what we’re talking about,” said Ellen Laan, a psychophysiologist from the University of Amsterdam.

Michael Sand, a sexologist who works in Germany, agreed.

“We don’t understand normative, healthy sexuality well enough to make judgments about what’s dysfunctional.”

Since the 1960s, researchers have operated under a variation of the simple model proposed by William Masters and Virginia Johnson that says the human sexual response starts with desire, progresses through excitement or arousal and ends with orgasm. But experts argued that notion might reflect the experience of men more than women, many of whom don’t see orgasm as a goal.

In recent years the field has moved toward a more complicated model based on the observation that many women go into a sexual encounter without being in the mood–perhaps they’re seeking intimacy or hoping to please their partner–and may not really want sex until after they become aroused.

But it wasn’t until very recently that anyone thought to test those theories by asking women.

Sand, who was awarded a prize for his innovative research, found that 57 percent of women felt a straightforward model best described their sexual experience. The 29 percent who endorsed the more complicated model were more likely to have sexual problems.

That made sense, Sand said, because Masters and Johnson recruited couples who liked sex a lot, while the more complicated model was based on the experiences of women with sexual complaints.

`We need to go back to the drawing board and come up with models that explain why some women have different sexual experiences, find out which models fit which women, so we can serve women more effectively when they have sexual concerns,” Sand said.

More than 300 researchers, physicians and therapists attended the four-day conference, which ended Sunday. Among other papers presented:

- Women who were physically active had better orgasms and higher overall satisfaction with sex than their inactive peers, according to a study of 65 women in Austin,Texas. But higher scores on a standard measure of sexual function did not seem to be related to cardio-respiratory level or to body mass index.

- A small group of postmenopausal women who took a single dose of an experimental nasal spray were more excited and had more sex in the next 24 hours than a comparable group who got a placebo. Larger studies of the drug, known as PT-141 or bremelanotide, are ongoing.

- A common antidepressant, bupropion, improved sexual function as well as sleep disturbances, weight gain and other menopausal symptoms in a small, preliminary study from the University of Virginia.
