‘Girls Gone Wild’ owner fined $500k

Los Angeles [LA Times] - A federal judge on Monday sentenced the founder of the “Girls Gone Wild” empire to 200 hours of community service for failing to adequately document the ages of performers in his videos.

The heavier-than-expected punishment handed down to Joe Francis in Los Angeles was similar to a sentence his Santa Monica-based production company, Mantra Films Inc., received in Florida last month.

Monday’s sanctions on the 33-year old entrepreneur included two years’ probation — twice what his lawyers requested — and a $500,000 fine, which Francis had agreed to pay under a plea deal with prosecutors.

Under that agreement, reached with the Justice Department in September, Francis admitted to filming underage women — who were often nude and intoxicated — for his videos. Francis pleaded guilty to two felony counts of violating federal record-keeping laws.

Monday’s sentence marked the second time that a federal judge had surprised Francis with a community service obligation.

Last month, Judge Richard Smoak in Florida ordered Mantra to serve 32 hours a month for 30 months, eight hours of which Francis must personally serve each month. Smoak told Francis he could reduce the total number of hours required by doing more of the service himself. His attorney, Aaron Dyer, has said Francis would appeal the Florida sentence, which included a $1.6-million fine to be paid by Mantra.

Francis built a $40-million-a-year business filming spring-break revelers and selling soft-porn videos using late-night infomercials. The felony violations involved a failure to document the ages of women who performed in videos filmed during 2002 and part of 2003.

Federal law requires producers of sexually explicit materials to file documents proving that performers in sexually explicit videos are adults. The laws are aimed at preventing the sexual exploitation of children.

Francis’ attorney argued Monday for leniency in the sentencing, calling his client an “exemplary citizen” and his crime “just a record-keeping violation.”

But U.S. District Judge Margaret M. Morrow told Francis she considered the charges serious and indicative of an “endemic” problem at his company.

The judge dismissed Francis’ request to be able to travel without restriction to his Mexican villa. According to Morrow’s sentence, Francis must seek permission before traveling outside the country on business or to travel anywhere for pleasure.

Dyer told Morrow that Francis had a meeting planned in China. The judge said Francis would have to file court papers before taking the trip.

Outside the courthouse, Francis said he believed he had been persecuted by the Justice Department.

“Of course I’ve been unfairly targeted by the government,” Francis said. “What better target than Joe Francis?”

‘Mansion Madam’ dances at Michigan strip club

Dearborn MI [AJC.com] — Lisa Ann Taylor [aka Melissa Wolf] looked out at a strip club’s dancing poles Thursday night and her heart was racing. It had been at least a year since the 42-year-old former Penthouse Pet had pole danced in front of an audience. It had been longer still since she had needed to take it seriously.

But she’s in trouble with the law in Gwinnett County and her legal bills are mounting. So Taylor walked out on stage at the Toy Chest under her now notorious stage name — “Melissa Wolf, the Mansion Madam.” — to dance her problems away one dollar at a time.

She was dressed like a cowboy — sort of. At least like a cowboy who favored black sequins but not pants.

That’s how Taylor brought her newfound notoriety to a Detroit area strip club Thursday night.

Taylor said she returned to adult entertainment for income after her racketeering arrest made it difficult to sell real estate.

Taylor and Nicole A. Probert, 30, of Lawrenceville, are accused of trading sex for money through a business aided by Web advertisements. The women also have been accused of procuring drugs for their clients and friends.

Taylor, danced late Thursday at the Toy Chest near Detroit before heading off to Cheetah’s of Windsor in Canada early Friday.

“I’d much rather be selling real estate right now, ” Taylor said after her Toy Chest performance.

She faces up to 37 years in prison on charges of running a call-girl operation from her Sugarloaf Country Club home in Duluth.

While Gwinnett District Attorney Danny Porter said she was charging clients as much as $5,000 to $10,000 for sex acts, it’s unlikely that she’s going to come home with that much money tucked away in a G-string from her gigs up north.

But she’s been adding bookings, and said more are coming. The bookings came after news of her arrest raised her profile, she said.

Lawyers for Taylor and Probert have said the women are innocent and that they plan to fight the charges.

Nancy Brun, the manager of Toy Chest, said Thursday night’s crowd was about average. Taylor was better recognized in her native Canada.

Among the songs Taylor danced to were “Black Betty”, “Addicted to Love” and “The Joker” by Steve Miller.

Most of the strippers at the Toy Chest, in their 20s, were infants when Taylor’s Penthouse magazine spread came out in 1985.

Paris Hilton gets probation

Paris Hilton was placed on 36 months probation and ordered to pay fines after pleading no contest Monday to alcohol-related reckless driving, a reduction of an original charge of driving under the influence.

Hilton, 25, did not appear in court. The plea was entered by her attorneys Howard Weitzman and Shawn Chapman Holley, the city attorney’s office said.

Judge Michael Sauer also ordered her to attend an alcohol education program and imposed other conditions.

He gave Hilton the option of reducing her probation to 24 months if she completed 40 hours of community service. No immediate decision was made on that option. The fines, plus penalty assessments, totaled about $1,500.

“The city attorney believes that this is a fair disposition to this case,” said Assistant City Attorney Ellen Sarmiento.

Hilton’s publicist, Elliot Mintz, said he spoke with her after the proceeding. “She told me that she was happy the matter is over,” said Mintz, without further comment.

Hilton was arrested Sept. 7 after allegedly being seen weaving on a Hollywood street in her Mercedes-Benz.

Police said she appeared intoxicated and failed a field sobriety test. She had a blood alcohol level of .08 percent, the level at which an adult driver is in violation of the law.

Hilton later said she may have been “speeding a little bit” and was on her way to get a hamburger because she had filmed a music video all day without eating.

The hotel heiress, singer, actress and handbag designer said she had consumed only a single margarita at a charity event that evening.

A no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt but is equivalent to a guilty plea for determining sentencing.

The reduction from the original charge is allowed under California’s driving-under-the-influence laws.

Various terms of Hilton’s sentence include not driving with any measurable amount of alcohol in her system and not refusing alcohol tests. The alcohol program involves attending a dozen classes.

Hilton has starred with sometime-friend Nicole Richie in the reality TV show “The Simple Life.”

Soccar fan pissed about penis tattoo

BUENOS AIRES (UPI) — An Argentine soccer fan was furious when he discovered that instead of his favorite team’s logo, a tattoo artist had etched a penis on his back.

The teenage fan of Boca Juniors — the club for which famed Argentine soccer legend Maradona played — asked the artist to tattoo the team’s logo on his back.

The tattooist, however, was a fan of rival club River Plate and decided to have some fun at the Boca loyalist’s expense, Terra Argentina reported Monday.

The victim, whom authorities did not identify because he was underage, said he did not realize the artist’s chicanery until he went home and show the tattoo to his parents.

Chicago [Chicago Tribune] - A public safety officer at the College of Lake County has been charged with sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl, authorities said Monday.

Marc W. Carder, 46, of the 4600 block of Vista Drive, Island Lake, was charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to McHenry County sheriff’s police.

The girl’s father called police Friday and said he found pictures on his family’s computer of Carder and his daughter engaging in sex acts, police said.

Police said an investigation indicated Carder had a sexual involvement with the girl for the past year. He was arrested Friday night, police said.

Bail was set at $75,000.

Information on how Carder met the girl was not available.

“At this time the investigation indicates this is an isolated incident and there [do] not appear to be any other victims,” police said in the release.

Carder has been a sworn public safety officer at the College of Lake County, in Grayslake, since August 1990, said school spokeswoman Evelyn Schiele. He has been placed on paid leave while the college consults with its lawyers to determine a course of action.

“Out primary concern is for the safety of the students,” Schiele said. She said police notified the school of the charge.
